John Rose Eye Care has taken a new approach to eye care. John Rose, optometrist is urging people to “open their eyes” to the growing problem of Glaucoma and other related eye diseases. Every day another 100 people start to lose their sight in the UK. The prevalence of sight loss increases with age, and the UK population is ageing. In addition there is a growing incidence in key underlying causes of sight loss such as obesity and diabetes. This means, that without action, the numbers of people with sight problems in the UK are likely to increase dramatically over the next 25 years.

John Rose was recently shortlisted for the Technology Practice of the Year by Optician Awards. By being one of the best equipped optical practices in the UK, with higher standards of equipment than most NHS hospital eye departments, John Rose Eye Care is very successful in helping people improving their sight and regularly gets referrals from ophthalmologists to his practice in Kingston upon Thames.

“Even if your vision seems OK, an eye exam can detect problems you don't know you have - and save your sight. I highly recommend a thorough eye exam at least once every two years. Department of Health figures show that over four million older people do not have regular eye tests, so their potential sight problems are not being identified or treated. With over 50 per cent of their sight problems being due to untreated refractive error or cataracts we can prevent a lot of people from losing their sight”.- Says John Rose

New approach
When the NHS started in 1948 the government could not afford to pay the true cost of the eye exam and stated that opticians should subsidize their income by selling spectacles.  Unlike other optical practices John Rose charges for the eye examination rather than putting emphasis on marking up frames and lenses. “We take pride in being optometrists and try to reflect that in our methods rather than try to sell people eye wear. By doing this we hope that people will start understanding the impact and importance of proper eye examinations. -John Rose continues.

John Rose Eye Care has been in practice in Kingston upon Thames for the past 12 years and with over 23 years experience John Rose will continue to fight for changing people’s minds of the importance of regular eye examinations.
